West Islip 9/11 Memorial - A Time for Remembrance –

9/11 Memorial Dedication Ceremony
Saturday, 12/8/2012, 9:00 AM
Higbie Lane and Paumanake Ave
West Islip, NY 11795

The West Islip Chamber of Commerce (WICC) recently held a September 11, 2001 Memorial dedication in the center of town. A monument, which was engraved and mounted with a piece of steel from the twin towers, was ceremoniously unveiled.  WICC president Diane Fontana revealed that the opportunity to obtain a piece of steel was nearly impossible.  "After several months of back and forth with the New York City Fire Commissioner's office, we finally had our steel," she stated.  A special thank you to Arnold and Diana Merkitch for their dedication in getting this done.  Ms. Fontana also thanked all of the generous sponsors and team that brought it all together, James Jackson, Raymond Rendina, Charles Spencer, Arnold Merkitch and Belinda Rubino.  The ceremony was attended by Legislator Tom Barraga, County Treasurer, Angie Carpenter, Councilman, John Cochrane, Councilman, Steve Flotteran, Assemblyman Andrew Raia, Assemblyman, Joseph Saladino and Assemblyman soon to be Senator, Phil Boyle. Many other people including some of our very own local families who lost loved ones on that date attended.

The following quote appeared in the program for this ceremony. "Let this monument be a testament to our history and let us never forget our neighbors who lost their lives and their families who remain.  This monument shall stand for generations to come and allow future generations a glimpse into our past.  This is a respectful place to reflect and give encouragement that we shall never forget."

A complimentary breakfast was given at Farrell's of Brooklyn.  Residents and businesses are welcome to purchase a dedication brick while they last. Please log onto our website at www.westislipchamber.org for an application.

We welcome all to come to this monument with their families to reflect and share this part of our history for many years to come.

Poem written by Helen Kisiel Schick

In Countless fields the poppies grow
to shield the brave interred below.
They gave their lives so ours could be
Lived happily – forever free!
But, sad to say, the promise made, in twenty years, began to fade.
“the war to end wars” did not prove true. It fell to more boys to fight anew
More fields of poppies have now been sown; the list of heroes steadily
grown. Korea and the Vietnam hell have added more than we can tell.
This latest action’s hard to judge – the ones to stop it will not budge,
So we must say a prayer for now that God will all these men endow.
With leadership and wisdom, too, so they will know what they should do:
“Keep faith with all the veterans passed and work for peace on earth at

It is our hope that we can obtain sponsorship for this memorial to defray the costs of the construction and the upkeep.  Along with the West Islip Beautification the West Islip Chamber has designed a beautiful monument that will include a piece of sacred steel from the World Trace Center.
