Michael A. Mercurio: A Pillar of Community Service in West Islip

The West Islip Chamber of Commerce has proudly awarded Michael A. Mercurio with the prestigious 2023 Community Service Award, a recognition befitting a man who has dedicated over four decades of his life to serving the community in multifaceted roles.

Michael A. Mercurio's distinguished career in community service spans an impressive four decades. His journey began with a commendable 25-year tenure at the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), where he retired as a lieutenant. This foundational experience set the stage for Mercurio's unwavering dedication to public service, which he further demonstrated through his involvement with the West Islip Fire Department (WIFD). His commitment and leadership abilities propelled him through the ranks at WIFD, leading to his current esteemed position as the Commissioner. Mercurio's extensive experience in both the FDNY and WIFD has been pivotal in enhancing community safety and emergency preparedness. In addition to these roles, Mercurio has also dedicated 15 years to serving as a commissioner and now proudly holds the title of Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. His enduring commitment to the fire service and the broader community exemplifies a career dedicated to public welfare and safety.

Beyond his firefighting duties, Mercurio has been a key figure in fostering community engagement. He has worked tirelessly to provide access to the firehouse for numerous youth fundraising events, promoting collaboration with various groups, including the West Islip Chamber of Commerce (WICC). His efforts in organizing and supporting these events highlight his belief in the power of community and the importance of nurturing the next generation.

Mercurio's dedication to training and development is evident in his role as a leader in training drills for the WIFD. His 15 years as a commissioner, and his current position as the Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, reflect his leadership qualities and his ability to guide and influence positive change within the department.

In addition to his fire service roles, Mercurio also serves on the board of directors for the Long Island Guardian Grants. This nonprofit organization works to assist volunteer paramedics and firefighters in owning and rehabilitating homes, providing up to $50,000 each for this purpose. Mercurio's involvement in such a noble cause further illustrates his commitment to supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving the community.

Above all, Mercurio is recognized as an all-around nice guy who is fair and honest. His personality and approachability have made him a beloved figure in the community.
